Maria Prieto

María Prieto is a lawyer from Colombia specializing in Human Rights and Gender-Based Violence. As a refugee herself, she brings a unique and empathetic perspective to the experiences of asylum claimants. María has also developed expertise as a Communications Manager and Social Media Coordinator. Since 2018, she has been a dedicated advocate for women's legal and reproductive rights in Colombia, as well as for women affected by sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Her work with nonprofit organizations spans several years, and she is currently involved with two refugee-focused organizations. In 2023, María was honored with the Amina Malko Fund by the Canadian Council for Refugees. As a mixed Indigenous-Black woman, she is a passionate advocate for human rights, particularly for the BIPOC diaspora, and firmly believes in driving meaningful change.
